How Russian media writes about Russian Opposition
Written by a language model on 21 September 2026, only from the articles and ratings collected here. It describes the coverage; it does not vouch for what the outlets claim. Method
Russia’s anti-Kremlin opposition—politicians, activists, exiled critics and people or outlets labelled “foreign agents”—featured in coverage of elections, legal cases and registry changes. Life.ru and Komsomolskaya Pravda relayed officials’ claims that opposition initiatives sought to disrupt voting and failed. Lenta.ru, EADaily and others reported the foreign-agent designation of filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, while Fontanka reported Alexander Sokurov’s criticism of that designation. Fontanka also reported police detaining two Yabloko representatives at a polling station. Reports on Zhanna Nemtsova relayed allegations involving an organization designated “undesirable,” alongside coverage of a wanted listing and an arrest ruling.
Across 123 articles in the last 30 days, the opposition was presented as neutral in relation to Russia in 64 and hostile in 59. It was cast as a threat in 33 articles, ridiculed in 12, presented as a victim in nine and as declining in three. Hostile portrayals accounted for eight of Komsomolskaya Pravda’s 10 articles, compared with 12 of Lenta.ru’s 36 and one of Fontanka’s seven. Coverage of Nemtsova cast her as a threat in EADaily but as a victim in Life.ru.
